भुवनेश्वर वात्स्यायन, पटना : फ्राम डुमरा टू नाटिंघमशायर और फिर इंग्लैंड की महारानी एलिजाबेथ से आफिसर आफ द आर्डर आफ द ब्रिटिश एंपायर यानी ओबीई। ओबीई इंग्लैंड में सबसे बड़ा सम्मान माना जाता है। इंग्लैंड का यह सबसे बड़ा सम्मान सीतामढ़ी स्थित डुमरा की रहने वाली बिहार की बेटी आशा खेमका के नाम से जुड़ गया है। पूरी तस्वीर का क्लाइमेक्स कुछ यूं है कि एक ओर जहां बिहार में बेटियों की शिक्षा के पिछड़ेपन की चर्चा अक्सर होती रहती है, वहीं बिहार की आशा खेमका को इंग्लैंड में शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में अविस्मरणीय योगदान के लिए 2009 के आनर लिस्ट में शामिल किया गया है। महारानी एलिजाबेथ के हाथों उन्हें आर्डर आफ द ब्रिटिश एंपायर मिलेगा। आशा खेमका इंग्लैंड की वह पहली एशियाई महिला बन गयीं हैं जिन्हें इस पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया जाएगा। पटना में रह रहे उनके परिवार के लोग भी उस समारोह में जाएंगे। सीतामढ़ी के डुमरा स्थित कमला ग‌र्ल्स हाई स्कूल से मैट्रिक पास करने वाली आशा मशहूर न्यायवेत्ता जस्टिस नंदलाल उटवालिया की पोती हैं। 16 साल की उम्र में उनकी शादी मोतिहारी के खेमका परिवार में हुई। तब उनके पति शंकर खेमका की उम्र 19 वर्ष थी और वह मेडिकल के छात्र थे। आशा खेमका के देवर डा. पी.एल. खेमका पटना के जाने-माने चिकित्सक हैं। डा. खेमका बताते हैं- 1978 में उनके भाई डा. शंकर खेमका अपने पूरे परिवार के साथ इंग्लैंड चले गए। डा. शंकर खेमका इंग्लैंड के स्टैफोर्डशायर स्थित क्वींस हास्पिटल में सीनियर कंसलटेंट आर्थोपेडिक सर्जन हैं। आरंभ से ही आशा खेमका को पढ़ाने का शौक था। इंग्लैंड में रहकर वह अपनी पढ़ाई करती रहीं। लगभग बीस वर्षो तक उन्होंनेइंग्लैंड में हाउसवाइफ के रूप में अपने को सीमित रखा और फिर एक कालेज में पार्ट टाइम लेक्चरर हो गयीं। इतने से ही संतोष नहीं था उन्हें, सो लगातार आगे बढ़तीं रहीं। आज आशा खेमका इंग्लैंड के वेस्ट नाटिंघमशायर कालेज की प्रिंसिपल व चीफ एग्जक्यूटिव हैं। यह कालेज इंग्लैंड के सर्वाधिक बड़े कालेजों में एक है। यहां पच्चीस हजार विद्यार्थी पढ़ते हैं और 1200 लोग कार्यरत हैं। इस कालेज का बजट 50 मिलियन डालर का है। आशा खेमका की हैसियत वहां कुछ इस तरह से है कि वह एसोसिएशन आफ कालेजेज की राष्ट्रीय बोर्ड की बैठक में बैठतीं हैं। शिक्षण व स्किल विकसित करने वाले सेवाओं से जुड़े संगठन नेशनल इनफारमेशन एंड लर्निग टेक्नोलाजीज एसोसिएशन में शामिल हैं। उनकी उपलब्धियों की सूची में यह भी शामिल है कि मई 2008 में उन्हें इंग्लैंड में एशियन वूमेन आफ द इयर का एवार्ड मिला और फिर 2007 में शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में उल्लेखनीय योगदान के लिए इंग्लैंड में उन्हें नेशनल ज्वेल एवार्ड मिला। जुलाई 2008 में इंग्लैंड के सिर्फ पांच कालेजों को स्टैंडर्ड इन एजुकेशन विभाग ने ग्रेड-1 दिया था। उसमें आशा खेमका का कालेज शामिल था। उनकी योजना 100 मिलियन डालर का सुपर कालेज बनाने की है। आशा खेमका के पटना स्थित परिजनों को इस बड़े सम्मान की सूचना खुद उन्होंने ही दी। वह कहती हैं- मैं प्रसन्न हूं इस बड़े सम्मान की सूची में अपना नाम देखकर। मैंने अपना पूरा जीवन शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में बेहतर काम करने में लगाया है। मैं अपने परिवार और विशेष रूप से सहयोगियों के प्रति आभार प्रकट करती हूं कि उन्होंने मुझे सदैव प्रोत्साहित किया। लगभग 55 वर्ष की आशा खेमका अब इंग्लैंड में रोल माडल बन चुकी हैं। उनके तीनों बच्चे बिहार में पैदा हुए हैं। बड़े पुत्र डा. स्नेह नेत्र चिकित्सक हैं। दूसरे पुत्र शील खेमका उद्योगपति हैं। बेटी शालिनी एक प्रतिष्ठत बैंक की आला अधिकारी हैं।

भुवनेश्वर वात्स्यायन, पटना : बड़ों के पैर छूकर आर्शीवाद लेने वाले पटना के संजय प्रधान हाल ही में व‌र्ल्ड बैंक के वाइस प्रेसिडेंट बने हैं। न्यू इयर मनाने के लिए इन दिनों वे परिवार समेत घर आये हैं। भाई डा.अजीत प्रधान ने रविवार को संजय के मिजाज के हिसाब से घर पर सूफी संगीत का एक निजी आयोजन किया था। संगीत की महफिल सजी थी। एक गीत के बोल थे .काहे को ब्याहे बिदेस अरे लखिया बाबुल..। इस गीत का एक अंतरा बेटी के विदा होने का मार्मिक चित्रण करता है। इस पर परदेस में बसे संजय भावुक हो उठे। कहते हैं-दुनिया में अब दूरी बेमानी है पर दिल तो आखिर दिल है। भावना और संस्कार खत्म नहीं होते। संजय कहते हैं - मैं अक्सर दोस्तों से भारत, खासकर पटना की बात करता रहता हूं। लोग बहुत सवाल करते हैं। मैं कहता हूं -सब कुछ हम अमेरिका में ले जा सकते हैं पर अपना घर थोड़े ले जा सकते है। व‌र्ल्ड बैंक में जब यह नई जिम्मेदारी मिली तो सबसे पहले पटना याद आया और मां-बाबू जी व भैया का आर्शीवाद लिया। आखिर दिल तो यहीं बसता है। देसी खाने के शौकीन संजय ने अमेरिका में भी इसकी व्यवस्था कर रखी है। कहते हैं- दीदी के घर एक खाना बनाने वाला लड़का था। मैं उसे अपने साथ अमेरिका ले गया हूं। बिल्कुल ही देसी खाना बनाता है। टेक्नोलाजी ने अब आपको ग्लोबल विलेज में खड़ा कर दिया है। भोजपुरी के चैनल्स अब आप अमेरिका में भी देख सकते हैं। यहां पटना में क्या हुआ, यह हर रोज हमें पता होता है। सेटेलाइट्स से सारे चैनल्स हम देख सकते हैं। मोबाइल ने बहुत कुछ सहज बना दिया है पर पापा के आशीष का हाथ और मां का तेज आवाज में पुकारना, आप अमेरिका में नहीं पा सकते। यूं संजय प्रधान व‌र्ल्ड बैंक के वाइस प्रेसिडेंट की हैसियत से मंदी पर कोई आधिकारिक बात करना नहीं चाहते पर अनौपचारिक रूप से जब इस मुद्दे पर बात शुरू होती है तो वे कहते हैं-अभी यह कहना काफी मुश्किल है कि आने वाले दिनों में इसका कितना असर होगा। जिस हिसाब से अमेरिका सहित अन्य देशों ने मंदी से जूझने के लिए पैकेज उपलब्ध कराए हैं उसका कुछ न कुछ फायदा तो जरूर दिखेगा। और आफ कोर्स बराक ओबामा के आने का असर भी दिखना चाहिए। तीसरी दुनिया के देशों पर संजय प्रधान ने व‌र्ल्ड बैंक में काफी काम किया है। एंटी करप्शन पर भी उनकी विशेषज्ञता है। वह कहते हैं-अभी काम ठीक से शुरू भी नहीं किया है। बहुत कुछ करने की योजना है। बात हो ही रही थी कि नाल और तबले की थाप पर हारमोनियम के साथ आज रंग है. शुरू हुआ और फिर संजय सारी बातें भूल कर भाव जगत में खो गए।

पटना के डॉक्टर की अमेरिका की धूम !

वाशिंगटन। बिहार की राजधानी पटना से अमेरिका गए एक डाक्टर ने वहां अपनी काबिलीयत से धूम मचा रखी है। उनकी महारत का ही नतीजा है कि तपन ठाकुर नाम के इस डाक्टर को अमेरिका के चोटी के दस डाक्टरों में शुमार किया गया है।जर्नल आफ द अमेरिकन कालेज आफ फिजीशियंस ने यह सूची प्रकाशित की है। इस सूची को तैयार करने के लिए डाक्टरों के शिक्षण, गुणवत्ता सुधार, शोध, लागत कटौती, रोगी सुरक्षा और नेतृत्व से जुड़े कार्यो को आधार बनाया गया।

पटना मेडिकल कालेज से डिग्री लेने के बाद डाक्टर ठाकुर इंग्लैंड चले गए। वहां दो साल तक एक अस्पताल में कार्य करने के बाद अमेरिका पहुंच1995 में उन्होंने सेंट मेरी अस्पताल में सेवाएं दी। उसके बाद वे मेंफिस चले गए।डाक्टर ठाकुर इस समय मिडसाउथ हास्पिटलिस्ट्स के डायरेक्टर और मिसीसिप्पी स्थित बैपटिस्ट मेमोरियल हास्पिटल के वाईस प्रेसीडेंट है।जर्नल आफ द अमेरिकन कालेज आफ फिजीशियंस ने चोटी के डाक्टरों के अलावा एक 'आनर रोल' भी तैयार किया है। इसमें भारत के चार डाक्टरों संजय डबराल, अल्पेश अमीन, पीयूष तिवारी और संजय भारती का नाम शामिल है।

This Friday, the Shiney Ahuja-starrer Hijack will introduce Kaveri Jha at the marquee.
This former Miss India (2005) winner claims that her life is as filmi as the career she has chosen. Kaveri, who hails from Patna, Bihar, claims that her life was transformed when her father got a transfer to Mumbai.
Kaveri talks to Nithya Ramani about herself, and her first film Hijack, which has been directed by Kunal Shivdasani, and also stars Esha Deol.
You were an air hostess before you joined films.
I still am. I have been working with Air India for the past three years. They had called all the Miss India contestants -- that's how I was offered the cabin crew post.

Tell us more about yourself.
When I took part in the beauty pageant, I was very naﶥ and didn't know anything about the industry. I was very shy and nervous. I was surprised as to how I got selected in the first place. But I have changed, and matured. I have opened up to opportunities and become confident.
I joined the Tamil film industry, and worked with directors there. That helped me understand how the industry works. Not knowing the language was a problem, but I managed. I did Telugu films too. I have Telugu films in my kitty now.
Then came Hindi films. I auditioned for Hijack and got selected. Actually, I auditioned for Esha Deol's role but they thought I suited the other role.

How do you balance your work as an air hostess and an actress at the same time?
It is very difficult but I manage. My superiors have been very supportive and that has helped a great deal. Since I have always wanted to be an airhostess and an actress, I couldn't have asked for more. I am very content.
What is Hijack about?

Do you think you have changed, since the time you won the Miss India title?
I was very naive; I'm mature now. I'm learning new things everyday. When it gets stressful, I tend to snap at people. But people think that I am throwing attitude. When you are an actor/actress, you cannot afford to lose your temper. I have to be very cautious of what I do and say.
Who are your favourite stars?
I am crazy about Shah Rukh Khan. I like Sri Devi and Amitabh Bachchan too.
What films do you like?
I loved Lamhe and Jab We Met. I also like all old black and white films and songs.
It is an action thriller, which has drama, trauma and romance in it. All of it is in sync with the script. One will not find any scene, sequence or song unnecessary. The film captures the emotions of those, who are trapped in a flight that gets hijacked. Esha Deol plays an airhostess. I play Shiney's wife. Kunal's daughter plays our daughter in the film.
What do you have to say about Kunal as a director?
He is very chilled out. He is an ad filmmaker, so he does not drag scenes. He is used to presenting his thoughts in a nutshell. That's why you will be on the edge of your seat throughout the film.
I am very fortunate to work with him. He is very understanding and patient. He never loses his temper no matter how long or hard or frustrating it gets. He gives us our space and lets us emote the way we want.

How was the experience of working with Shiney?
He is the first celebrity I ever interacted with and I have been his fan. I've liked him in all his films. He is very friendly and committed. He has helped me a great deal. Though he is a successful actor, he does not any airs. He is very humble and down-to-earth.
He made me feel comfortable on the sets. He used to adjust his dialogues or positions for my convenience. Not everyone will do that for someone new.
Any memorable instances?
There is a scene with Kunal's daughter where I am gifting her a teddy bear. She grabbed it even before Kunal could say 'action'! It was fun shooting with her.
There is another scene where Shiney is pulling me into the water. The scene narrated to me was that only Shiney falls into the water. Kunal and Shiney pulled a prank on me without letting me know the actual scene, where both of us were supposed to fall into the water.
When the scene was shot, Shiney pulled me so suddenly that I was shocked.
I wasn't allowed to have ice-cream, as I had to shed some weight. But I would have ice-creams and chocolates anyway, and Kunal would yell at me!

Acting the part : Vineet Kumar

Born and brought up in Bihar, Vineet Kumar completed his studies in law and psychology from Patna University. He has acted in numerous movies, TV serials and theatre productions and has also tried his hand at advertising. Speaking about his early years, he says: "I was interested in human nature from a very early age. I liked listening to people and observing them. At times my observations would amuse me and at times they would leave me intrigued. Perhaps that was the reason I took up psychology later on." Kumar adds: "When my elder brother became an IPS Officer, there was pressure on me to formulate my career plans as well. So, although I was already active in theatre by then, I joined a law college just to keep my father happy. This brought me a lot of time and I used it for doing serious theatre." He went on to join the Indian Peoples' Theatre Association (IPTA), Patna, in 1973. After 14 years of stage work and participating in national politics during the Jai Prakash Narayan Movement, he moved to Delhi to join the National School of Drama. "I had always felt the need to train myself formally as an actor. My three years at NSD represent very important years of my life, as they gave me the right kind of exposure, taught me new things that are almost mandatory for all actors to know and also made me meet some very talented artists of that time." Elaborating on the importance of formal training in theatre, Kumar opines: "It is essential for any actor, without which his/her tools (body, mind and voice) would remain underdeveloped and unsharpened. In India, unfortunately, one doesn't have too many in this regard. Besides, private institutes are an expensive proposition." On the bright side, he adds: "Learning on job with a serious theatre group can be very helpful. This way one gains a lot of practical knowledge." But, he does caution that it is equally important for one to determine how experienced the director of that group is. Kumar also feels that a passion for the art is of prime importance. He says: "Confidence and sensitivity are key factors but those can be developed through consistent training and stage work. In my case, however, it was a little different. I did not choose theatre but theatre chose me, or atleast I like to believe that I am the chosen one. So, I have to make a difference through my work." Kumar eventually ventured beyond theatre and got to work with directors such as Govind Nihlani, Praksah Jha, Ram Gopal Verma and many more. So, does he regret choosing theatre? "Absolutely not. In fact, I take pride in lots of moments and experiences related to theatre," says Kumar. However, he does add that Indian theatre, as compared to the one overseas, has a long way to go. He says: "Unfortunately, in India, a lot of us do not understand what theatre truly means. Theatre groups abroad are far more professional and follow a different discipline. They are far more precise in their ways because they have been able to explore more in terms of form, as well as content." But then, that does not mean that Indian theatre is stagnating. "Today, Indian theatre is gaining international recognition as more and more professional theatre groups are taking part in international festivals. Things can only get better." And his message for aspirants: "Only those with a drive to do something for humanity at large and those who have great respect for the art should pursue theatre. And whether you are pursuing another job during the day or not is irrelevant, as long as you take out enough time to pursue it with utmost sincerity. Apart from that, training is essential for any actor, so one must not take it lightly. Be absolutely sure about taking up acting as a profession. Also, all actors --- aspiring or established --- must read a lot as it opens up one's mind. Reading fiction, for instance, improves one's power to imagine." — As told to Sakshi Khattar

Prof Alok Kumar says

I attended Notre Dame Academy in Munger and Jamalpur. Both schools played a significant role in shaping up my career. It is fair to say that I would not have reached where I am now without the help of Notre Dame Academy. I did my I.Sc. from R.D. & D.J. College in Munger where my father was a professor of Physics. He was also the principal of the college for a few years. My mother was an elementary school teacher in Munger. I spent most of my childhood in Lalloo Pokhar and Belan Bazar areas of Munger. Many people there have had a strong influence on my life and I am grateful to them for their help.

Third generation in Teaching :- His grand father late Shri Kuldip Sharan Singh was a middle school teacher and established a school in Masaudhi ( Patna District ) .
