Basketball coach hunts for talent
MOTIVATION and hard work is the theme of the Infant School's head of physical education Dr Sanjeev Dhari Sinha, who is currently conducting a one-month 'summer talent Identification progamme' in co-operation with the General Organisation for Youth and Sports (Goys).
Popularly known as Sandy, the 38-year-old from Patna, the capital of India's eastern Bihar state, has been in the country for five months and specialises in Basketball.
His qualifications include a Master of Arts, Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy in the fields of sports coaching and personnel management.
Currently Sanjeev is conducting talent identification programmes in basketball for boys and girls aged eight to 12.
"I was recommended to Goys by the Bahrain Basketball Association and my job involves looking out for talent both local and expatriate, working on skills, technique, tactics and fitness," says Sanjeev.
The students presently under his supervision would have undergone 44 hours of training over 22 days.
Sanjeev gained his first basketball scholarship back in 1984-85 in the southern Indian city of Chennai, and a year later started coaching and passing on his knowledge to others.
In 1994, four of his students went on to be selected for India's national team in the Asian Schools Basketball Championships in Korea.
"I believe in motivation and hard work for my students and in 1993 I dribbled a basketball for 24 hours and 10 minutes at the Woodlands Basketball in Patna and got recognition in the Limca Book of Records," continued Sanjeev.
Sanjeev received an invitation in 1991 to attend a world clinic organised by the NBA and Mike Krzyzewski, the then US national coach to promote world peace through basketball.
Before coming to Bahrain, Sanjeev was director of the ABC Sports Academy in Bihar; an official at the Asian Women's Basketball Championships hosted by New Delhi in 2001; a sports consultant at international schools in Bangkok, Thailand and did a stint with the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence in Qatar.
Sanjeev is now looking forward to getting more involved in the development of basketball in Bahrain
